Martin Donisthorpe Armstrong (1882-1974), was a prolific poet, novelist, and critic. His first collection of poetry, Exodus and Other Poems, was published in 1912. He enlisted to serve in the first World War and served as a private in the Artists' Rifles, obtained a commission in 1915 to the 8th (Middlesex) regiment, and in 1917 was sent to the French front, where he remained until the armistice.
